Gold has long been considered a monetary value to establish the value of currency, even dating as far back as 300 B.C. With the Coinage Act of 1792 establishing the U.S. monetary system using the dollar as the basic unit, the $1.00 basic unit was deemed to contain 24-3/4 grains of fine gold. An ounce (troy) of gold at this time had a world price of $19.39.
Due to the rise in the value of gold, U.S. citizens were prohibited from holding gold money in 1934. This ban was extended to include gold being held abroad. What with the dollar price of gold rising to $35 in 1934, the use of gold in trade (international) was additionally limited as the price of gold continued to rise. However, on December 31, 1974 all restrictions on holding gold were removed.

Since that time although the value of gold has often fluctuated, it has continued to increase in value. Today, many collectors, as well as investors, find buying gold coins and gold bullion coins an excellent investment.
