Often referred to as 'junk coins', these United States silver coins are anything but. If you had a bag of silver coins valued at $1,000 it would contain about 715 ounces of silver that would track the spot value. Does this mean you should go out and buy US silver coins? That is a call that must be made by the individual based on their purpose and budget.
For those considering the purchase of silver coins as a means of 'survival', i.e., those that buy them based on the fear that the day may come when dollar is valueless - then their US silver coins would revert to their original purpose - money, this may be a good idea. While these pre-1965 coins would be well suited for this purpose, some would say that if you are looking to invest money in silver bullion, you would be better served by putting your money into silver bullion bars or rounds.
