..(1878-1921) ..(1921-1935) | U.S. Peace Silver Dollars |
Minted from 1921 through 1935 this coin was designed by Anthony de Francisci. Issued without being sanctioned by Congress, this coin was a commemorative peace coin that entered into circulation January 3, 1922. Originally minted in high relief, it was modified to low relief in 1922. In 1964 legislation authorized the minting of 45 million silver dollars, as such over 316,000 dollars (at the Denver Mint) with the Peace design were struck, These silver dollars were dated 1964 but struck in 1965. None of these coins were released into circulation and all plans for completing the coinage were abandoned. Unfortunately, none of the struck dollars were preserved for posterity. The weight of the Peace silver dollar is 26.73 grams. It is composed of .900 silver and .100 copper with a net weight of pure silver being .77344 oz. The diameter is 38.1 mm and it was minted in Denver, Philadelphia, San Francisco, New Orleans and Carson City. |
