This silver dollar is called Morgan after its designer, George T. Morgan. Minted from 1878 through 1921, this coin was authorized by the Act dated February, 1878 with the weight and fineness conforming to the act of January, 1837. The weight being 412-1/2 grains and the fineness of the silver being .900.Production of this coin was halted after 1904 due to low demand and lack of silver bullion. Over 270,000,000 silver dollars were melted (provisions of Pittman Act, 1918), however, in 1921 coinage of silver dollars was resumed. The Morgan dollar design was used again with some slight modifications until later that year the Peace design was adopted. The weight of the Morgan silver dollar is 26.73 grams. It is composed of .900 silver and .100 copper with a net weight of pure silver being .77344 oz. The diameter is 38.1 mm and it was minted in Denver, Philadelphia and San Francisco. |
