Called a 'Half Eagle' this coin had a $5.00 value and was the first gold coin struck for the U.S. The first coin struck weighed 135 grains; with a finess of .9167. The weight (129 grains) and fineness (.8992) were changed in 1834 and in 1837 the fineness was increased to .900 with the weight remaining the same.
There are many varieties, especially during the early dates with the 1822 half eagle considered one of the most valuable coins ever issued by the US (only 3 known).
Commemorative (since 1986) and bullion (since 1994) coins have been made at West Point - making the five dollar coin the only denomination produced at all of the US mints.
